Center For American Rights Files FEC Complaint Against Washington Post for Paid Ads Elevating the Harris Campaign
Chicago, IL—Today, the Center for American Rights filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) complaint against the Washington Post for its failure to comply with federal election law by its last-minute ad campaign promoting stories that disparage President Trump.
“We’re days from an election, and the Washington Post is pouring cash into social media advertising that exclusively helps one candidate for president and denigrates another. That sort of last-minute spending is not protected by the FEC’s press exemption; the Post needs to come clean and comply with the law,” Daniel Suhr, President of the Center for American Rights, said.
“Of course the writers at the Post have the First Amendment right to cover the news and express their opinions on the election. Under the law as written, however, they cannot spend on advertising favoring one candidate without being transparent with the American people,” Suhr continued.
This filing is part of a broader effort by the Center for American Rights to restore election integrity and media accountability. Earlier this month, the Center filed a widely covered complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against CBS News “60 Minutes” for their manipulation of Vice President Harris’s interview. In September, the Center filed both an FCC and an FEC complaint against ABC News for its moderators’ unfair intervention targeting one candidate in the only debate between the two nominees.
